Keeping Your Family Active During the Winter Months

The cold weather has arrived and this has most of us staying indoors and getting comfy on the couch. However, even as the snow begins to fly and the temperatures drop it is important to keep your entire family active.

On average adults should get at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week and children should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day. The best way to guarantee your entire family is getting enough activity is to make it part of your normal routine.

peratures can make outdoor activities impossible and even dangerous. However, on those days where the sun is shining and the temperatures are above freezing, bundle up the entire family and head to the playground. Walk there if you can and then encourage the whole family to move. That means, mom and dad get ready to channel your inner child and join in on the playground fun.

Active Games

We are very fortunate to have so many forms of entertainment instantly available at our fingertips and many of those are active games that can help get the family moving while indoors. Invest in a game console and only purchase games that can be played as a family. Also, make sure that these are only active games. For example, you can find games where the family plays tennis, race against one another while running in place, boxing, etc.

Enroll Your Family in an Indoor Activity

Ensure your children get enough physical activity by enrolling them in an indoor activity each winter. Think dance, gymnastics, ninja zone, and cheer (all programs we proudly offer at Jam Hops). That means for mom and dad, you should also find an activity that you can do all winter long. Plan to get your movement in at the same time as your children as possible.
