In honor of March being National Cheerleading Safety Month, we chose to utilize our March Jam Packed Blog to tell you about our Cheer program! The Cheer program at Jam Hops has been around since 2006... yes, that is 16 YEARS’ worth of stunting, pyramids, pompoms and cheer routines. Though our cheer squad has been a bit smaller the past few years, it has been growing rapidly. Since our new Cheer Director, Nyssa Johnson joined the #Jamily back in 2021, our cheer program has opened new classes, run an exhibition cheer team, and is even getting prepared to host tryouts for our returning Jam Hops Competition Cheer Team! How exciting is that?!
Not only is cheer exciting, but it’s also a great opportunity for your child to learn important life skills, like confidence, teamwork, and dedication. When asked what makes cheering at Jam Hops so special, Nyssa said: “Cheerleading at Jam Hops gives children the opportunity to meet new friends and learn a new sport, while helping them to become not only great athletes, but well-rounded individuals.” Our cheer program includes recreational cheer classes, seasonal exhibition teams, and a competition team that will begin this May and run until March 2023.
Recreational Cheer Classes:
Our recreational cheer classes are for boys and girls ages 3-18 with all levels of cheer experience. Our class options include Intro to Cheer 1 & 2 (Ages 3-5) and Cheer 1-3 (Ages 6+), which run once per week all year long. Each of our cheer classes provide a great opportunity for children of all ages to learn a broad range of cheer skills. Some of the skills they will work on and progress through are partner stunts, tumbling, jumps, flexibility, motions, and chants! During classes, children will also get to participate in team building games that give them the opportunity to make new friends while learning a new sport. Exhibition Cheer Team:
Our exhibition cheer team is for boys and girls ages 6+, who are looking to see what it's like to be on a competition cheer team. The exhibition team practices together for about 3 months, during which they learn a short routine that is performed at 2-4 local events. This team has 1½ hour practices once per week, making it a low-commitment option that gives children the opportunity to experience the teamwork, routines, and performances that go into a competition cheer team. Our last exhibition team ran from mid-December to the end of January 2022 and our next exhibition dates are TBD. Keep an eye on our monthly newsletter for future dates.
Competition Cheer Team:
Our competition cheer team is for boys and girls ages 6+ and tentatively runs from May 2022 – March 2023, with practice being twice per week. Competitive cheer gives children the opportunity to work as a team to apply the skills they are learning in class on the competition floor. It also provides an environment that pushes children to grow as individuals and step out of their comfort zone. During their 9 months of training, children will develop team comradery, feel what it’s like to work towards a mutual goal, and even create lifelong bonds with their peers. The competition cheer team will learn a full 2½ minute routine that they will compete at multiple local competitions. We will be hosting a Tryout Prep Clinic on April 2nd, from 10:30 AM–12 PM. Tryouts will be held on April 8th (5:45-7 PM) and 9th (11:30 AM-12 PM). Click HERE to learn more!
