Ballet: A dance that is characterized by its light, graceful, fluid movements which value straight lines, pointed toes and soft dynamic. It originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present form during the 19th century.
Jazz: A high energy dance that values strong ballet technique matched to the rhythms of upbeat and lively music. Traditionally performed to jazz music, the dance style has taken on a new form where it is often paired to upbeat pop music.
Lyrical: A style that combines ballet and jazz dancing techniques. It is performed and inspired by the to music or "lyrics" of a song and values expression of strong emotions. This style concentrates on an individual approach and expressiveness of such emotions as love, joy, hurt, or anger.
Tap: A percussive dance performed wearing shoes fitted with metal taps. It is characterized by rhythmical tapping the toes and heels in various patterns to the beat of a song.
Breakdancing: Breakdancing is a style of street dance that incorporates freestyle, stylized footwork, and athletic or acrobatic movements.
Hip Hop: Hip Hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or dance styles that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.
Musical Theater: Our musical theater class focuses on telling a story through movement. Most movement will be based in jazz technique, and may incorporate lip-synching and character development. Dancers should wear jazz shoes for this class.
